Upward extension of the Center for Medical Biology, Queen’s University Belfast
Doran Consulting has provided a range of design consultancy services for various projects as part of the redevelopment of the Health Sciences Campus at QUB. We were engaged to provide design consultancy for the construction of a connection between the Medical Biological Center high-rise.
And a new educational building and were subsequently engaged to provide additional services in connection with this subsequent design & build contract for the upward extension and renovation of the existing Medical-Biological high-rise center and the anatomy building.
The anatomy building work consisted of a six-story vertical extension of the existing two-story building to create additional outbuildings and office space. The existing two-story Anatomy building, for which Doran Consulting originally provided structural engineering, was designed to allow for future expansion.
The new steel frame was built on the roof of the Anatomy Building adjacent to the existing Medical Biological Center tower and included tower interventions to provide access to all six levels. The work was complicated by an extremely confined and cramped site, with the existing Anatomy building surrounded by other buildings in the immediate vicinity.
The need to keep the existing Anatomy building and adjacent one-story library extension operational during construction further complicated matters and required the use of additional safety measures, including the use of a crash deck to protect the library extension’s low ceiling. The limited site prohibited the use of scaffolding, leading to the development of a unified glass/cladding system as the facade for the six-story addition.
Alteration and renovation works as part of the project required the removal of the existing concrete cladding panels from the MBC tower within the envelope where the new Anatomy extension adjoins the tower, as well as some structural changes and strengthening works to the first floor of the building. the original two-story anatomy building.
